Minute by Head Master in C.0.D.No.162.
Mr. Tanner was got out by the Committee of the
Dicesan School to supply the vacancy caused by the appoint-
ment of Mr. Ralphs here.
He has barely been six months in the Colony
and I do not think any man should be encouraged to treat an
engagement so lightly.
If his application is entertained, I submit
that it would only be equitable for the Government to pay to
the Committee of the Diocesan School the balance of Mr. Tan-
ner's passage after he has himself paid the proportion re- quired by his agreement.
I am but slightly acquainted with him, having
met him twice on public occasions. He has also twice called on
me with reference to chance of employment here, and I spoke to
him in the tenour of the above remarks.
Mr. Tanner is a bright active young man, and
looks as if he would prove a useful master. I have not seen
his certificates.
The only ground on which I am opposed to his
appointment, is the charge of injustice caused to a Charitable
Institution by its funds being drawn upon to pay passage mo-
ney twice in the same year, which a rich corporation like the
Government
